There are no quotes in the story, but I've heard this before, that President Johnson-Sirleaf frowns on what she calls "indecent dressing". I harp and harp against this garbage all the time, but the other day I did some research, and it seems that scientists have proven about 20,000 times over that there's no correlation between dressing sexy and being raped. Too bad EJS is perpetuating this dumb myth.

This topic is totally interesting to me, so do keep going. Then again, I keep bombarding you with stories about debt relief for Liberia, grassroots activism in the US re debt relief for Liberia, and related stuff like talks relating to the Liberian donors conf in DC. So maybe I'm not the best judge?
I am sure the president was addressing the issue in a way not meant to enforce a dress code, twas more to enforcing indecency laws.
There are indecent exposure laws in many countries, plus challenging our youth to abhor decadence is no law issue.
We are not a BET nation. We should not be one when we cannot even grow our own food, yet.
my concern is that usually this idea of indecent dressing is attached with rape, and liberia is the rape capital of the world. men tend to use the sexy dressing myth as an excuse for rape. but rape is entirely the fault of the perpetrator, even if the woman is walking around naked.
it's just another myth that lets liberian society ignore the problem: rape is not committed by evil foreigners, it is not the fault of the woman, and it is not the fault of evil NGOs. in this country, rape is generally committed by men, who are raping people they know/are related to, and the survivors are mostly children. sad but true.

you're right, that was irresponsible of me. i have no source. officially, South Africa is the worst, but there's no data on Liberia right now. people who work in the field think that Liberia may be the country with the highest incidence of rape, but it can't be confirmed yet.
a friend of mine who works at one of the country's largest hospitals in monrovia says she sees 10-30 new cases per day, most of them children. but studies around the world show that the vast majority of cases go unreported.
Well, it was during a talk with some local school kids in Monrovia when the Former Jordanian Queen Noor and George Soros visited a school with her. A student asked her what she was doing about indecent dressing. She said there were laws on the book but she felt the best approach was to have the intervention of parents. So I don't see how she drew a correlation between this and rape. But I agree that Liberia is not a BET nation. We are struggling to emerge from 14 years of devastation and cannot afford to have individuals, males or females, being semi-nude. I don't see any link between that and rape.
In spite of all the tragedy Liberia experienced during the last quarter of a century, I am proud of the level of discipline which the vast majority of Liberians still possess. The problem is many people judge the whole nation by the 200,000 or so ex-combatants and criminal gangs that ran the country as the fiefdom over the last decade or so.
